Having recently finished a three-year stint as coach of the MLU Sandsharks girls team, Steve brings many years of playing and coaching experience to the position. Prior to coaching in MLU, Steve coached travel soccer in the Greentree program from 1996 to 1999, and also coached travel soccer in Maple Shade for several years. In 1981, Steve—at the age of 16—coached Maple Shade’s U-12 team to an undefeated season which saw them not yielding a single goal in league or tournament play before losing the South Jersey championship to Willingboro on penalty kicks. A graduate of Maple Shade High School, Steve was an all-county defender in a league featuring future professionals Peter Vermes (Delran), Bobby Joe Esposito (Riverside) and Glenn Carbonara (Vineland). He currently plays with Winslow Classic in the South Jersey Masters O-35 League. Steve is also a passionate historian of the game, having written a number of articles on U.S. soccer history in magazines and on the internet. He was a contributor to The Encyclopedia of American Soccer History by Roger Allaway and Colin Jose, and his research on the first American professional soccer league (in 1894) has been cited in National Pastime: How Americans Play Baseball And The Rest Of The World Plays Soccer by Stefan Szymansky and Andrew Zimbalist. Steve currently holds a NJ SYSA F license. He lives in Mount Laurel with his wife Dorothy and three children.
