BASIC FIRST AID PROTOCOL
Basic First Aid protocol for minor injuries treatment, such as sprains, strains
and contusions is referred to as an easy to remember acronym,
R. I. C. E.
R=
Rest-
Limit the use of the limb that is injured,
take it easy.
I
= Ice-
Apply an ice pack or a bag
of frozen peas works well, to the area of injury for twenty minutes, every hour,
being careful not to damage skin tissue. The cold ice minimizes swelling to the
area,
C
=
Compression -
Wrap the injured limb
with an elastic bandage, to minimize swelling and prevent fluid build up. It
should be wrapped snugly, but not cut off circulation.
E
= Elevation -
Raise the injured area
above the level of your heart to allow drainage of fluids from the area and to
prevent pooling of fluids. This will minimize the amount and duration of
bruising of the injured area.
The R.I. C. E. protocol is the only First Aid treatment that
is safe treatment for sports injury without professional advice. Ice for 20-30
minutes every hour for the first 12 hours then every 2-4 hours after. Continue
for the first 48 hours.
